How To Get Started With Carb Cycle...
1) Determine Your Cycle...
This is incredibly important as each person reading this is different. Some have 20 or more pounds to lose while others may just want to lose a few pounds and tone up... So it's important to find a carb cycle that works for you. Below I'll outline a few popular choices:
If you have 20 or more pounds to lose: try following a 3-low carb, 1 high carb approach. Then repeat in this fashion. This should be a great starting point!
If you have 10 pounds to lose: try following a 2-low, 1-high, and repeat approach. If you are working out a few times a week following this approach, it should work well for toning up and losing those last few pounds.
If you want to tone up: try following a 1-low, 1-high, and repeat approach. Because you are probably working out and your body needs more carbs, this is a great starting point.
Of course, these are just a few examples of what a carb cycle may look like... Now let's look at step #2...
2) Focus On Eating The Right Foods...
We often get asked what are the best foods to eat while carb cycling... And we always tell people to stick with ONE ingredient foods. Here are some examples:
Protein: Eggs, egg whites, chicken, beef, wild game, fish, ...
Fats: Avocado, nut butters, nuts, seeds, coconut oil, olive oil (for dressings), grass fed butter, ...
Carbs: Sweet potatoes, potatoes, rice, beans, oatmeal, fruits, ...
Veggies: any and all...
Then once a week (usually on your second high carb day), include some of your favorite treats (like pizza, a burger and fries, etc.)
What we love about carb cycling is the variety of foods you can eat. So get creative with your meals. Remember, carb cycling is all about balance and it will allow you to enjoy more of the foods you love once you get going with it...
3) Don't Forget About Protein And Fats...
When carb cycling, we can't forget about our other two macronutrients: protein and fat.
For protein, it's pretty simple... For both low and high carb days, try eating 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds you will be eating 150 grams of protein per day.
The best way to do this is by simply having protein with every meal.
For fats, we follow one rule of thumb. Just like your carbs, you will also be cycling your fats:
On HIGH carb days, keep the fats LOWER.
On LOW carb days, keep the fats HIGHER.
An easy way to do this is on your low carb days, include a fat source with every meal. Include some avocado or handful of almonds or tablespoon of nut butter with each meal.
Then on higher carb days, focus on just cooking your meals in healthy fats and eating a carb source at every meal.
The key is keeping it SIMPLE. No counting calories or worrying about every food that you eat.
Just focus on the question: "Is today a low carb day or a high carb day?"
As you can see, getting started with a Carb Cycle is pretty simple. And the best part is there is no calorie counting or weighing your food.
