MISTAKE #1: Mindset

If you don't think you can do a pull-up, you won't. I was stuck in the mindset rut for years, and guess what? I never did a single pull-up. 

So your first step is changing your mindset from "I can't" to "I CAN".

That's your first step.

Mistake #2: Not Practicing

Like I mentioned earlier, your current workout program (no matter how good it is) won't help you make drastic improvements on your pull-ups. 

If you want to improve, you need to PRACTICE!

The 3 Techniques To Improving Your Pull-Ups

TECHNIQUE #1
ACTIVATE

Most people I see who are trying to get their first pull-up or improve their pull-ups are missing out on actually activating the RIGHT MUSCLES. 

"I just don't have the arm strength" is what I hear a lot. 

The truth is, pull-ups are a FULL BODY exercise and specifically, you should really be engaging your lats (back muscles), your core, and even your glutes. 

One super simple exercise for getting an understanding of activating the right muscles is what's called a "Scapular Pull-Up"

Notice how I am focusing on REALLY activating my back muscles here. 

If you first focus on ACTIVATING your back muscles on your pull-ups, that will be a big step in the right direction in helping you increase your strength and improve your pull-ups!

TECHNIQUE #2
ISOLATE

When it comes to improving your pull-ups, remember what I said earlier:

Practice Makes Progress!

So you need to start doing pull-ups in order to improve your pull-ups. That being said...

By ISOLATING your muscles through isometric exercises, this can lead to HUGE improvements. 

Often times, just practicing a slowed down pull-up and doing certain isometric exercises can lead to really fast results. 

No matter where you are currently, doing slow eccentric pull-ups and isometric holds is something you should be doing. 

For example, try holding yourself at the top of the bar then slowlyyyyy lower yourself down. 

Your focus on each rep should be to FEEL your muscles working. Notice how activated my back muscles are in that video. 

You want to REALLY feel your muscles working on these slow eccentric and isolation movements. 

TECHNIQUE #3
ENGAGE

I want you to think of the pull-up as a full body exercise. Specifically, a plank! That means...

Your core is tight, your glutes are tight, toes are pulled towards your shins. 

Every muscle in your body should be engaged. 

This is why the pull-up is such a powerful exercise and one of my favorite core movements...

...Because it literally strengthens everything in your body.
