The reason HIIT works so well is because it forces you to push at a high intensity for a short period of time…
What people tend to forget about High Intensity Interval Training is the HIGH INTENSITY part. You see people doing interval training at 75% of their full speed but going for 90-120 seconds at a time…
When I see this, I call it “Glorified Cardio” because essentially what you are doing is long cardio at different speeds.
HIIT wasn’t meant to be done like this… HIIT is supposed to be done at your highest intensity for a short period of time (usually 10-60 seconds) which leads to one kick-butt, fat incinerating workout.[/text_block]

People push hard in the interval but then don’t allow enough rest to recover for the next interval set…
Most times… Magazines, websites, and even trainers overlook rest when it comes to interval training… When the reality is, that’s half the workout.
Just think about the last time you performed an interval workout… Where you able to push your hardest every set? Or were the rest periods too short?
My guess is that they were too short which meant you struggled to go at your top speed.
All that to say, it’s OK to extend your rest periods during intervals because your working sets will be that much more beneficial!

Scientists out of Italy tested the 30-minute High Intensity theory and compared it to a group who used traditional resistance training.
In the study, researchers had the High Intensity group train for 30-minutes each session while the traditional group got to train for 60-minutes.
Although the High Intensity group worked out for half the time, they were able to increase the afterburn effect by 450% compared to the traditional lifting group.
That translated into 22 hours of afterburn or an extra 452 calories burned… From ONE 30-minute workout!
